All About Lips

23 Jan

One of my favourite lipstick shades this season has been Media by M.A.C. This is a very dark shade in a burgandy/plum colour. I use Annabelle lipliner in Bordeaux although M.A.C has an even darker liner in Nightmoth. When wearing a dark shade like this, make sure your lips are exfoliated as every tiny piece of skin is enhanced and even if you are not a lipliner wearer, this would be the time to use one. I like to keep the rest of my face pretty bare as this colour is a statement enough for me, but for a night out I will add more colour and liner to the eyes along with the bold lip.

If you are looking for something to try, a new shade of lipstick is always an easy way to update or change your look.

Best of 2013

6 Jan

Instead of welcoming in 2014, I decided to take a look back at 2013 since I haven’t been blogging as much as I should. 2013 was actually more memorable than I thought, filled with fun memories, travel, music, writing and completing a goal of mine. Yes, I am looking forward to the year ahead, but like every year there are ups and downs and don’t want to get overly poetic and flowery about what the year will have in store for me.  Since this blog was initially intended to merge my love of beauty products and writing, here are a few of my new favourite discoveries of 2013. I will give product reviews of each in the next few weeks, but here is the condensed list:

1. Lime Crime opaque lipstick in Babette

2. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair

3. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC) Lip Tar

4. Lush Buffy Body Butter

5. Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation

6. MAC Lipstick in Media

7. Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes Statement Mascara

8. Real Techniques Makeup Brushes

9. I.C.O.N Antidote antioxidant replenishing cream for hair

10. Aveda Enbrightenment brightening facial cleanser

My funny Valentine . . . Me!

16 Feb

Really, Valentine? I know you come around every year on the same date and everyone loves you but I can’t say I’m  in the fan club. I’m very happy for those that have been hit by cupid and buy into what a money-making day you are, but this past year it felt like you were a real  holiday. From elaborate gifts and everyone wishing each other a Happy Valentine’s Day all over Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and in line at the grocery store – I just don’t get it. Are you really mushy or do you just want people to feel bad about themselves? Single people, men, widows, divorcee’s all feel your pressure. So instead of gorging myself with my own box of chocolates and getting drunk (alone), I decided to go out with another single and fabulous gal for some red martinis and a lot of laughs. I’m not all black and misery Valentine, I’m corny deep down. So, in keeping with the spirit of St. Valentine and Springs hottest shades of pink and red I decided to go for a soft pink look with my make-up.

On my face I used:

Dior Diorskin Nude Foundation in # 031 and Eyeshadow 5 Couleurs Iridescent in 809

NARS  Blush in Orgasm and Lip Gloss in Super Orgasm

MAC Lipstick in Fabby and Mineralize Blush in Hand-Finish to highlight

I really do hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s Day! xoxo

Skin Deep

17 Nov

Not only do I dislike cold weather because of the way I feel but also because of the way I look. If you live in a climate like I do and are starting to feel winter is coming fast, then you may have also noticed some changes in your skin and hair. I am definitely one of those people who gets dry in the colder months. I actually just went for a facial last week but as we all know, sometimes it is difficult to have the time or money to treat ourselves. Here are a few of my favourite skin care products to get you through the cold months when there is less Vitamin D, and when our skin can look dry, dull, blotchy or sallow.

Garnier  Moisture Rescue Fresh Foaming Cleanser. It contains grape water extract to help protect the skin from external aggressors, and apple water to help maintain skin’s moisture barrier. I really like this cleanser because my skin does not feel tight or dry after using this, just feels cleansed and refreshed.

B.Kamins Diatomamus Earth Masque  which comes in dry to normal, or oily to combination skin types. It actually does what it claims to do. It brightens and tightens my skin. Formulated with essential nutrients, soothing herbal extracts and diatomaceous earth rich in natural minerals including magnesium, iron, calcium and sodium to help rejuvenate dull skin. Rich in water-binding ingredients that soothe and rehydrate skin to provide a more uniform, brighter and firmer complexion.

St Ives Apricot Scrub. I have used this for years and have not found a facial exfoliant I like better. I think I like that you can really feel the grains so I feel like I’m getting a really good exfoliation. They do have variations on the apricot scrub depending on your skin type. Apricots contain powerful antioxidants and the scrub also has corn kennel meal and walnut (all of which help aid in exfoliation). When I was looking at the St Ives website I noticed a few products that I am interested in trying too such as the Moisturizing Olive Scrub, the Warming Scrub and Daily Microdermabrasion (all of which help reveal brighter skin . . . well we hope).

Estee Lauder Ideal Light Brush-on Illimuninator. I like this for under my eyes but it can also be used as a highlighter. It hides any dark circles and brightens the area.

I’m also loving the Nars bronzer in Laguna that I recently purchased for some colour and I love love love MAC‘s Mineralize Skin Finish for some highlighting and adding brightness to the face. The mineralized blush is also a great choice because it has a pearlized finish.

Pick of the Week

5 Nov

Besides Russia being known for vodka and hats there is an amazing lip gloss called Russian Red.I’m not sure if in fact a Russian invented this colour but whoever did, I am grateful. This is a colour by MAC  that comes in a lipstick or a lipglass. My pick is the lipglass.

This is one of my favourite glosses for a number of reasons. The first time I decided I wanted to try red lips I opted for the lipglass to ease into it but even the gloss is quite intense. It is a true red colour – rich and vibrant. This is a great option for someone who does not like lipstick but enjoys the look of colour. With the lipglass, my lips feel smooth and the colour lasts. This is a celebrity favourite colour and has no signs of ever being discontinued. If you decide to jump on this Fall’s trend of red lips, try to keep the rest of the face neutral. The lips are a statement enough.

*I feel like a real lady with this shade of red, hence the cloche*

Thank You for Being a Friend

18 Oct

This past weekend I went to visit one of my besties in Toronto to celebrate her birthday. Heidi had a very monumental birthday. Certain people are excited to get another year older but most of us aren’t, so she didn’t feel like doing much celebrating. I still wanted to visit her because for me, I have been so blessed that she was born on October 17. Although she doesn’t believe it, she has enriched my life in so many ways. I wouldn’t really know how to put into words how important a person she truly is to me . . . besides being my #1 supporter, she is there for me if I need anything and that anything could be as simple as a fashion crisis. There is a quote from Sex & the City and Carrie writes, “maybe our girlfriends are our soul mates and guys are just people to have fun with”. So for me, having great friends that challenge me, encourage me, and enrich my life is just as – or more beautiful than the lipstick I decided to wear today. In case you’re wondering it was MAC in FABBY.

                                                                       *My beautiful BFF Heidi*

On a side note, you may be asking yourself “what does this post have to do with anything”? If you read the top of this page it does say random insight so that was my randomness for the week. I’ll try to keep it at a minimum . . . promise.

Winged Out

8 Oct

It seems like winged eyeliner is everywhere. It has always been a look that can go many different ways and in my personal opinion one that can always look current. When I think of winged eyeliner, I either think bombshell, classic or punk. Depending on what mood you are in, you can achieve anyone of these looks with winged eyeliner. When I think of a bombshell look it can be a thick winged eyeliner and pale lips, a classic look may be a thinner winged eyeliner with a red lip and my personal favourite the punk or 80’s look you can play with all sorts of colour.

A great tip when trying to get a winged look is to make a triangle at the outer corner of your eye and fill that in to get the winged look. Also, q-tips, concealer, blending brushes or sponges and eye make-up remover will all be your friend!

I decided to take a twist on the 80’s look with a pop of colour on my lips. I tried to keep the shadow on my lids quite light because I was doing a stronger lip.

For this look . .

On the eyes I used LANCOME Sensational Effects Eyeshadow in Off the Rack, Dior Eyeliner pencil with blending tip in 090 (Black). I also went over the eyeliner with Lancome eyeshadow in Statuesque to intensify the line and black colour. I also took the eyeliner and went on the inside of my eyelids on the top and bottom.

I didn’t want to be to harsh on the cheeks either so I used MAC  Mineralize Blush in Hand-Finish and last but certainly not least MAC lipstick in Girl About Town.

What is your favourite winged eyeliner look? What are you doing with this current trend?

Have a good Thanksgiving my fellow Canadians!
