Shiny Happy Hair

26 Nov

After nights of cold sweats and anxious days I finally got my fix! For those of you who don’t know, I had mentioned in one of my Hairapy session posts that I am addicted to the shine hair colour gives me . . . so like an addict I finally got my fix. If you have a hairdresser like I do, then you know how valuable they are. I’m pretty religious about going to see her but I always tell people it’s because I like the company (not because I’m obsessed with my hair or anything). This is the longest I have gone without seeing her so I guess I needed 2 fixes 🙂

As far as styles go, I tend to pick out hairstyles that are not meant for my hair type. I always pick out styles for very thin hair or with extensions but my hairdresser will always try to tweak it for my hair type. This time I showed her a picture of Nicole Richie with a layered, messy cut with bangs.

My hair was so dry and had so many split ends but my wonderful hairdresser gave me just the TLC it needed. She kept the length and layered it and of course put a dark black violet on it for my addiction.

I just have to work on that sultry Nicole Richie look

Thanks Cindy! xoxo

Tis the Season!

23 Nov

It’s that time of year that everyone loves, well maybe not everybody, but most people love the thought of Christmas. The sights and, oh yes, the sounds of the holiday season are everywhere around us. I think I’m somewhere in between love the holiday to make those Christmas carols stop already! In the famous Christmas song they sing “tiny tots with their eyes all aglow” well I know what gets my eyes all aglow this time of year –  cosmetic holiday sets! Maybe it is the most wonderful time of the year. From perfume sets, make-up, skin care, hair care and body treats you will find a set for anybody in your life, or a gift for yourself (why not?).  The great thing about these sets is that they are usually at a good price point. The amount of product you get is unbelievable for the price. Sephora is probably the best place to check because of the array of brands they carry with exclusive offers or sets and major department stores carry an abundance of perfume sets.

A few great blockbuster sets worth mentioning . . .

Smashbox Wish for the Perfect Pallette for $59. It is worth over $260 and a portion of proceeds benefits the Children’s Miracle Network.

The kit Includes:
49 eye shadows
10 cream eye liners
6 brow powders
1 brow wax
8 lip glosses
2 blush
1 bronzer
1 highlighter
4 mini brushes (eye shadow, eye liner, angled brow and lip)

Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Shimmer and Shine Collection for $54. This is valued at $142 and exclusive to Sephora.

The set includes:

4  Eyecolors in Shimmer (frosted cappuccino), Flicker (burnished violet), High Shine Gold Medal (pale gold), and High Shine Vapor (graphite)
Big & Bright Eyeliner in Intense Black
Clear Radiance All-Over Face Color (sheer translucent glow)
Pink Petal Blush (bright poppy pink)
100% Natural Lipgloss in With a Twist (tulip pink)
100% Natural Lipgloss in Sprinkles (diamond shimmer)
Full Tapered Blush & Eye Brush
Booklet featuring instructions for Shimmer and Shine looks

Lorac Box Office Sensation for $56. This is also exclusive to Sephora which is well worth over $56.

This set contains:
36  Eyeshadows
9  Lip Glosses
3  Blushes
Duo Bronzer

*Most of these Blockbuster sets do sell out quickly for obvious reasons so I would try to get your hands on one as soon as possible. It is like shopping for Tickle me Elmo for make-up junkies. I know what is on my list this year*

Skin Deep

17 Nov

Not only do I dislike cold weather because of the way I feel but also because of the way I look. If you live in a climate like I do and are starting to feel winter is coming fast, then you may have also noticed some changes in your skin and hair. I am definitely one of those people who gets dry in the colder months. I actually just went for a facial last week but as we all know, sometimes it is difficult to have the time or money to treat ourselves. Here are a few of my favourite skin care products to get you through the cold months when there is less Vitamin D, and when our skin can look dry, dull, blotchy or sallow.

Garnier  Moisture Rescue Fresh Foaming Cleanser. It contains grape water extract to help protect the skin from external aggressors, and apple water to help maintain skin’s moisture barrier. I really like this cleanser because my skin does not feel tight or dry after using this, just feels cleansed and refreshed.

B.Kamins Diatomamus Earth Masque  which comes in dry to normal, or oily to combination skin types. It actually does what it claims to do. It brightens and tightens my skin. Formulated with essential nutrients, soothing herbal extracts and diatomaceous earth rich in natural minerals including magnesium, iron, calcium and sodium to help rejuvenate dull skin. Rich in water-binding ingredients that soothe and rehydrate skin to provide a more uniform, brighter and firmer complexion.

St Ives Apricot Scrub. I have used this for years and have not found a facial exfoliant I like better. I think I like that you can really feel the grains so I feel like I’m getting a really good exfoliation. They do have variations on the apricot scrub depending on your skin type. Apricots contain powerful antioxidants and the scrub also has corn kennel meal and walnut (all of which help aid in exfoliation). When I was looking at the St Ives website I noticed a few products that I am interested in trying too such as the Moisturizing Olive Scrub, the Warming Scrub and Daily Microdermabrasion (all of which help reveal brighter skin . . . well we hope).

Estee Lauder Ideal Light Brush-on Illimuninator. I like this for under my eyes but it can also be used as a highlighter. It hides any dark circles and brightens the area.

I’m also loving the Nars bronzer in Laguna that I recently purchased for some colour and I love love love MAC‘s Mineralize Skin Finish for some highlighting and adding brightness to the face. The mineralized blush is also a great choice because it has a pearlized finish.

The Hairapy Sessions

11 Nov

For those of you who know me well, you know one of my obsessions is hair.  I remember recently watching a Versace fashion show and with all those beautiful clothes I was just mesmerized by the hair (and curious how to get  my legs to look like the models).  Even my old roomies and I would have endless conversations about our hair and the infamous Mane & Tail shampoo.

*Some Inspiration*

I will admit that I get bored quite easily with my hair and always want to change the colour, cut bangs, cut a fringe, add layers, get highlights and I think I even contemplated perming my hair recently (not a joke). I am quite fortunate to have a hairdresser that is very  honest  and very patient with all of my personalities and  can be easily reached through phone, text, e-mail or morse code. This is the longest that I have went in between getting my hair done and it is slightly killing me – my hair looks so dull. My hairdresser once pointed out that I love getting my hair coloured because I am “addicted to the shine” it gives, so I guess I’m really itching for my fix.  I have always wanted to be a platinum blonde but that is not happening, so any suggestions out there?

Forever Young?

10 Nov

If age really is just a number than why is my body telling me something different? Not that I am over the hill, but in no time I will be 30. Although 30 may not seem ancient, I have noticed a few changes within my late 20’s and they are only increasing as 30 is creeping up on me. Oh 30, why does everyone in magazines and television make you seem so glamorous?

I really don’t think having a hangover last for 2 days and sore feet is glamorous. Ah yes, martini’s must not give you hangovers and apparently vodka/water will. I have also noticed where and how I gain weight has changed. I always heard that your body changes every 7 years and I finally believe the claims. I have also noticed a few more lines around my eyes and a few years ago I could last from 7 pm to 7 am in a pair of heels with no complaints.  I really don’t think I look my age or feel my age, but it is really a fight between what my body is telling me and what I would love to do. Things that I would love to do may include being irresponsible, going out all night (no sleep) and making it to work the next morning at 8 am, not worrying about eye creams, serums and exfoliating, not worrying about calluses, destroying my feet and my back and especially not thinking about tomorrow.

Hmmm, on second thought maybe  my early 20’s are more blurry than I had liked to remember. Hence, why your 30’s must be glamorous (well maybe not glamorous) but definitely good. You have a stronger sense of yourself, what you want in life and taking charge of your life. Maybe I should have had my late 20’s mind with all of the early 20’s fun all wrapped into one. Actually I may try this partnership for the next chapter in life – I can still enjoy all the things I used to, maybe just a little more, ahem, responsibly. Just like everything else the same sentiment holds true – everything in moderation.

*For those of you who know me, you will understand my over-exaggeration of getting older and the fact that you know I will still suffer in heels and probably have those 2 day hangovers every now and then . . . old habits die hard*

Pick of the Week

5 Nov

Besides Russia being known for vodka and hats there is an amazing lip gloss called Russian Red.I’m not sure if in fact a Russian invented this colour but whoever did, I am grateful. This is a colour by MAC  that comes in a lipstick or a lipglass. My pick is the lipglass.

This is one of my favourite glosses for a number of reasons. The first time I decided I wanted to try red lips I opted for the lipglass to ease into it but even the gloss is quite intense. It is a true red colour – rich and vibrant. This is a great option for someone who does not like lipstick but enjoys the look of colour. With the lipglass, my lips feel smooth and the colour lasts. This is a celebrity favourite colour and has no signs of ever being discontinued. If you decide to jump on this Fall’s trend of red lips, try to keep the rest of the face neutral. The lips are a statement enough.

*I feel like a real lady with this shade of red, hence the cloche*

I Left my Heart in San Francisco

4 Nov

As I said in my last post, I was going to San Francisco for the weekend and I can honestly say I’m not one of those people who likes coming home after a vacation. If I could be a gypsy, I would (well one that stays in decent hotels and can do some shopping . . . high-class gypsy perhaps?). San Francisco is full of interesting people and places to see. In a word I would describe it as diverse; from Haight-Ashbury, The Castro, Chinatown, Union Square, Fisherman’s wharf, North Beach, Nob Hill and Alcatraz across the bay. What would a trip to San Francisco be without  a ride on the cable car and a trip to the Tanner household on Postcard Row? Check and check!

It has a city feel with a laid back mentality to it. The people were very friendly and many of them unique. Besides seeing all of the tourist spots, it was nice to walk around and experience the city. The San Francisco Giants won the world series the day we left but I can imagine how the city came together to celebrate. If you haven’t been and get the chance, San Francisco is definitely a city to check out!

I’m not sure if it was the California air or water but besides being in a state of complete euphoria on vacation my hair and skin looked amazing. No dry patches and smooth locks. Even on vacation, I had to indulge a little bit and did some shopping. Besides purchasing some cute tops and Doc Martens (right on Haight street before we got a free song serenaded to us, just added to my nostalgic feeling of buying some Doc’s),  I ended up buying some make-up. I think I bought some really functional and useful items – or what I keep telling myself. What I did buy is a great set from Nars which is the Orgasm Lust lip and cheek set. It contains  the cult favourite orgasm blush, laguna bronzer and a super orgasm lip gloss for only $30.

The blush and bronzer are a smaller size but perfect especially for travel or for someone who would like to try the products. I also bought a Too Faced duo eyeshadow in Erotica/Silk Teddy – a perfect bronze shimmer and peach.

The Too Faced eyeshadow and Nars set compliment each other perfectly for either a natural day look or for a sexy night look.

*On a side note, I think I should move to the West Coast for the beauty benefits alone*
